The University of Cambridge is known worldwide for the excellence of its teaching and research. Dr Lummis’ laboratory is based in the Biochemistry Department, which teaches natural science, medical and veterinary students, and has strong research programs to study a range of different biological processes including molecular enzymology, cell signalling and control of transcription and translation. Dr Lummis’ group has used a multidisciplinary approach to study the structure and function of Cys loop receptors over the last 20 years, and in particular has made major contributions to understanding the molecular details of the 5-HT3 receptor. In addition the group also studies a range of other ligand-gated ion channels in both vertebrates and invertebrates including nicotinic acetylcholine, GABAA, GABAC and glycine receptors.
