The Department of Neuroscience from the medical faculty of Geneva is dedicated to teaching to medical students and basic research in the field of neuroscience and physiology.

Since the earlier discovery of genes encoding for neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), the research group lead by Prof. D. Bertrand contributed to the functional studies of these ligand gated channels and participated to major publications. Specialized in the field of electrophysiology and pharmacology, most findings include the first characterization of the homomeric a7 nAChRs, the discovery of the amino acids that determine the ionic selectivity of these receptors and characterization of allosteric modulators.
